The Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports has set 31 October 2026 as the deadline for the registration of foreign nationals of non-Greek origin and persons of Greek origin admitted to higher education institutions as scholarship holders of the Hellenic State for the 2026–2027 academic year.
Applications must be submitted to the Secretariat of the School or Department to which each student has been admitted. They may be submitted in person, by a legally authorised representative or by registered post with acknowledgement of receipt.
Required documents
The application must be accompanied by:
- A copy of the secondary school leaving certificate, together with an official translation.
- A certificate from the competent education authority in the country where the certificate was issued, confirming that it entitles the holder to study at a university in that country.
- A certificate confirming the award of a scholarship by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports.
- A certificate issued by the competent authority of the relevant country or by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirming the nationality and origin of the scholarship holder and their parents. Where such a certificate is no longer issued, the announcement provides for alternative supporting documents.
- For scholarship holders of Greek origin, a certificate from a Greek diplomatic authority abroad confirming residence outside Greece for at least five years before the academic year in which they were selected.
- A solemn declaration stating that the student is not enrolled in another School or Department of higher education in Greece and has not previously obtained a degree in Greece after admission under this special category.
- Three identity-card-style photographs.
Greek-language proficiency
Applicants of non-Greek origin admitted as scholarship holders, as well as non-Greek-origin graduates of secondary schools in EU Member States, must provide proof of Greek-language proficiency at B2 level. Accepted certificates are issued by the University of Athens’ Teaching Centre for Greek Language, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s School of Greek Language, or the Centre for the Greek Language.
This certificate is not required of students who hold a secondary school leaving certificate from a Greek or Cypriot school, or from a foreign school where they have successfully completed and been examined in Greek. The announcement also sets out arrangements for scholarship holders of Greek origin who require further Greek-language instruction.
Certification and translation of documents
Documents issued abroad must be submitted with an official translation into Greek and must meet the applicable certification requirements. Depending on the country of issue, this may require consular certification or an Apostille. Students should consult the official announcement and the Secretariat of their School or Department for the requirements that apply to their documents.
Late registration may be considered only in exceptional circumstances. In such cases, a reasoned application must be submitted within 30 days of the registration deadline and is subject to approval by the competent body of the relevant Department.
