{"id":8114,"date":"2026-09-15T11:43:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T08:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medical.edu.gr\/?p=8114"},"modified":"2026-11-03T11:49:47","modified_gmt":"2026-11-03T08:49:47","slug":"university-of-thessaly-students-win-first-place-in-international-machine-learning-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medical.edu.gr\/el\/university-of-thessaly-students-win-first-place-in-international-machine-learning-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Thessaly Students Win First Place in International Machine Learning Competition!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>GreenGuardian Secures First Place in the GreenDIGIT Discovery Challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nikolaos Vatopoulos and Dimitrios Thanasoulias<\/strong>, third-year students at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-ce.uth.gr\/\">Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering<\/a> of the University of Thessaly, have won <strong>first place in the international<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/greendigit-project.eu\/ecml-pkdd-2026-greendigit-wrap-up-in-naples\/\"><strong>GreenDIGIT Discovery Challenge<\/strong><\/a> with an innovative Machine Learning-based system designed to significantly reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of computing infrastructures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two students presented their project, entitled <strong>\u201cGreenGuardian,\u201d<\/strong> on 9 September 2026 in Naples, Italy, during <strong>ECML-PKDD 2026<\/strong>, one of Europe&#8217;s leading scientific conferences in Machine Learning and Data Mining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Machine Learning for Greener Computing Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GreenDIGIT Discovery Challenge addressed an increasingly critical issue: the high energy consumption of data centres and research computing infrastructures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The carbon intensity of electricity supplied by the power grid varies throughout the day, depending on the energy mix. Building on this observation, Nikolaos Vatopoulos and Dimitrios Thanasoulias developed a system that <strong>forecasts energy consumption and associated CO\u2082 emissions over the coming hours and schedules computational workloads during periods when electricity has a lower carbon footprint<\/strong>, while ensuring that all execution deadlines are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a simulation based on real-world data from <strong>three computing facilities and 28,662 computational jobs<\/strong>, GreenGuardian achieved an <strong>89.9% reduction in carbon emissions<\/strong> compared with conventional scheduling methods. In a separate test using a real-world forecasting system, the reduction reached <strong>62.2%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach is particularly relevant at a time when demand for computing power is growing rapidly, driven in part by the expansion of Artificial Intelligence applications. As a result, the sustainable operation of digital infrastructure has become a critical area of international research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Student-Led Initiative Earns International Recognition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two students entered the competition <strong>entirely on their own initiative<\/strong>, independently of any university course or research laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competition was organised as part of <strong>GreenDIGIT<\/strong>, a European project funded by the <strong>Horizon Europe<\/strong> programme.
